Experimental Studies on the Neutralization for the per Oral Sodium Hydroxide Corrosion.

Abstract
Using healthy rabbits weighing about 2kg,, experimental corrosion of the empty esophagus and stomach was produced with 3; 0cc, of 2.0% Sodium hydroxide solution, with irrigation of esophagus and neutralization of the gastric content with 100cc, of 0.2% acetic acid solution at 10 minutes, 1 hour, 5 hours and 10 hours after the production of corrosion. Histopathological changes were studied thereafter and the following results were obtained.
1. The lesions in the neutralized groups were always less pronounced than in the control group at all times, and the difference in the pathological lesion depended on the duration of time lapse before the neutralization, with the difference being more marked in the earlier periods and with later neutralization.
2. Among the neutralization groups, there was marked difference between the groups neutralized at 1 hour and -5 hours after corrosion, the latter showing more severe changes.
3. The regenerative phenomena were seen, not only in the control but also in the neutralized groups, with its peak at the 3rd day, continuing upto 5th day and thereafter.
4. The 10min, and one hour neutralization groups showed better findings than that seen in the 5 hours and 10 hours neutralization groups on the fifth day, with smooth regeneration thereafter.
5. The pathological lesions seen in the esophagus of the 10 min, and 1 hour neutralization groups at 2 weeks and those of the 5 hours and 10 hours neutralization groups on the fifth day and thereafter showed no marked difference and proceeded similarly.
6. The pathological lesions seen in the stomach of the neutralization groups showed similar findings with some delay when compared with those in the esophagus, and the lesions in the 10 hours neutralization group was so severe, especially in the early stage, as to be comparable with that in the control group.
7. Among the neutralization groups, the scar fromation became more definite with the increase of time interval until the neutralization.
8. In the corrosion of esophagus and stomach due to sodium hydroxide, the irrigation and neutralization of the esophagus and the stomach is effective only when conducted within upto 1 hour after corrosion.
